Before starting the review I have to admit that the name of one of the labels that helped for this release, combined with their motto, made me smile. I am into wh40k (as some of you may already know), so when I saw “In the grim darkness of the far future there is only WOOAAARGH” I almost fell from my chair. Now let’s check the release itself. It’s a split album in which a new(ish) but loud band, Herida Profunda, join forces with a really old name of the genre, Hellbastard.
Herida Profunda participate in this split with 10 songs, probably closer to grind than crust, full of energy, hate and brutality. Don’t expect songs that last 3-4 minutes, with the exception of their outro “Hipokryzja / Hypocrisy” (3 minutes long) και το “Cyrk / Circus” (2 and a half minutes), their songs last 1 minute, maybe 1 and a half. Dark elements, that are nowadays part of the crust genre, still exist but are not the main theme in their songs. Herida Profunda manage to combine the old school crust style with grind and they do it successfully. Finally their last song in the split is a cover, “You Suffer” by Napalm Death. It’s kind of a funny choice if we consider how short it is, lasting just a few seconds.
As for the other participating band, Hellbastard, word are not (and will probably never be) enough. They formed in 1984-85 and for many they are the godfathers of crust (at least name-wise), naming the genre with their 1986 demo “Ripper Crust”. We are talking about a band that followed a parallel path to DOOM and Amebix, so we know (at least partially) what we are going to listen in this album. Good, old and beloved crust, the way it was when it all began, but closer to our day and age. It’s hard to believe how a band that started 30+ years ago (the fact that they were not active for a long time doesn’t really matter) manages to produce something with such long history and make it sound so fresh and new.
A really good really, I would say it’s a “must” for those who love the genre (and for those who are not familiar with it). Yes, even if you don’t like punk and you believe that it has nothing to do with metal, my initial statement stands. Listen to it, feel your ears bleeding and your neck aching from headbanging and you will probably change your mind, if not for crust as a genre then surely for these 2 bands.
4,5/6 (Herida Profunda)
