It hasn’t been that long since I last publicly shared a manifest about the (staggering) Black Metal music produced in France, especially amidst the underground. Along with Poland, I dare say, France is currently on top of its game, with bands springing to life almost every day, offering massive releases that blow our minds. This time, we’ll be dealing with Throane, a one-man outfit and “Derrière-Nous, La Lumière” (which roughly translates to “We, Behind The Light”), the “band’s” first full length and simultaneously the first and only release ever.
“Derrière-Nous, La Lumière” is a seven-track album with a striking cover radiating despair and, in a way, nihilism; two concepts that I think represent what the entirety of the album has to offer. It’s a perfect portrayal / reflection of the feelings created by this sonic experience. As far as the music part is concerned, this debut is characterized by mostly discordant, dissonant guitars in mid – pace rhythms. A dark ambience is also present, especially when tempos are taken down, creating an eerie, pitch black sense that induces fear; a mental / psychological pain that’s hard to let go, should you give yourself into the music. There are many alternations concerning the rhythms. Most of the times, pace is taken down for drone tunes to surface, making atmosphere a bit more spiritual than it already is. An important role to this building of mysticism play the distant vocals. It feels like the artist is shouting while being elbows deep into an abyssal well, something that intensifies the whole vibe.
This album is dangerously addictive. The hypnotic intelligence of the compositions and success in manipulating the emotions infused, bear testament to the thought that “Derrière-Nous, La Lumière” is actually the product of a controlled paranoia. Do you want to escape reality and dive into your inner self? Do you want to distant yourself from everyone and everything? Indulge into Throane with the eyes closed.
I should mention at this point that the man responsible for this project is Dehn Sora, who handles every instrument. He is mostly known for his layouts, designs and artworks for bands like Archgoat, Blut Aus Nord, Code, Manes, Otargos and so on. Interesting work.
“Derrière-Nous, La Lumière” was recorded at Severh Studios between December 2015 and January 2016, while the mixing and mastering process happened at Autoclave Studio in Singapore.
