‘Surgical Steel’ (2013) was a great comeback. People & the press, everyone loved the so called “Heartwork” pt. 2, 17 years after the band’s last effort. This 2014 EP entitled ‘Surgical Remission/Surplus Steel’ offers, as the name suggests, a collection of rare bonus tracks and previously unreleased material in order to fulfill fans thirst for more music from their favorite band and of course to keep Carcass’ name hot. “A Wraith In the Apparatus” appeared as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of “Surgical Steel”; “Intensive Battery Brooding” was the B-side on a 7″ vinyl single for “Captive Bolt Pistol” (and also appeared as a Japanese bonus track on “Surgical Steel”); “Zochrot” was a single recorded during the “Surgical Steel” sessions that appeared as a Flexi-disc in the October 2013 issue of Decibel magazine; I don’t know if also “Livestock Marketplace” was recorded during the “Surgical Steel” sessions but it makes sense if it was recorded at that time and it hasn’t been previously released; while “1985 (Reprise)” may be some sort of re-working of “Surgical Steel’s opening track.

The quality of the songs is above average even though nothing extra ordinary. To be really honest the opening track could have been easily be on “Surgical Steel”. ‘Intensive Battery Brooding’ is decent and solid but is rather slow for my standards (even though it ends in fast tempo), ‘Livestock Marketplace’ is a bit shallow but not annoying, ‘Zochrot’ is really cool with its mid tempo and oriental scales melody while “1985” associatively closes the chapter of Carcass’ return as it opened it on “Surgical Steel”.

If you are a fanatic of Bristol’s legends you should buy it especially if you can’t afford of buying every special edition and you want all of “Surgical Steel’s” bonus tracks in one disc.
