Castle Rat may don’t reinvent the wheel or reinvent -Pantera wise- the steel yet they can proudly claim they refresh a bogged down sun genre that recycle over and over again the same ideas. In an obscure crescendo of cult ethos ‘Into the Realm’ was recorded in an abandoned Philadelphia church that the band temporarily converted into a studio. Among the flooded floors, decaying plaster, and ornate stained glass windows, Castle Rat stacked their Orange amps and tracked over two and half days, with engineering and production assistance from Davis Shubs and Thomas Johnsen.

The Rat Queen (aka Riley Pinkerton on guitar/vocals/songwriter and soul of the band) is accompanied by Henry Black (“The Count”) on lead guitar, Ronnie Lanzilotta(“The Plague Doctor”) on bass and Joshua Strmic (“The Druid”) on drums and percussions.

Ancient gods and prehistoric demons and succubus can also be proud when they see bands like Castle Rat in flat and uninspired ages we live still be born and record albums. Brooklyn-based band actually represents a sound and an image that most fans have left behind as a memory or picturesque leftovers of the past. Whoever has this point for Castle Rat certainly haven’t heard a note from them.

For those who are unfamiliar with their sound I can only say that they can make themselves an early Xmas present and buy the album and still not be late to their party and that whoever likes swords, sorcery, permanent hair stylish, medieval elements, obscure rock parts, a theatrical display tin the veins of King Diamond, Dio narrating singing style,classic 70’s Heavy Metal riffs, a Coven feeling, NWOBHM and especially Witchfinder General influences and Dungeon & Dragons aesthetic surely will be charmed.

Furthermore there’s a moody atmosphere on songs llike “Dagger Dragger” or “Cry For Me” with a Black Sabbath like aura. “Dagger Dragger” that is outstanding has a perfect storytelling cohesion, 60’s psychedelic inspired “Fresh Fur”, “Red Sands” is (the longest track here) another highlight with brilliant guitars, stunning performances of all band’s members and great structure while the whole album in its entirety above all features a charismatic voice and a magical atmosphere that hypnotic hymns like “Cry For Me” or doomy “Nightblood” can fit perfect with all the interludes and the echos and the reverbs. Debut of the year? Probably…
