Cloven Hoof – Never A Prophet In Your Own Land

Genre: N.W.O.B.H.M./Heavy Metal
Country: U.K.
Label: High Roller Records
Year: 2026

For a band that has weathered the shifting sands of lineup changes and stylistic detours for nearly five decades, Cloven Hoof enter 2026 with surprising clarity and vigor. Never A Prophet In Your Own Land, the band’s tenth studio album, reaffirms their status as one of British metal’s enduring institutions while doubling down on the qualities that first made them distinct: muscular riffs, melodically sure songwriting, and an appetite for epic, theatrical presentation.

The headline story is already familiar: Lee Payne’s coup bringing Harry “The Tyrant” Conklin into the fold has paid dividends. Conklin—whose work with Jag Panzer put him on the map—proves again why he’s regarded as a top-tier metal vocalist. His performances here are both commanding and versatile: a glowering menace on heavier cuts, a soaring, earnest presence on the more anthemic moments, and a theatrical edge that suits Cloven Hoof’s penchant for mythic storytelling. If Heathen Cross (2024) announced that marriage successfully, Never A Prophet In Your Own Land cements it.

Musically the album leans more toward the buoyant, muscular classicism of A Sultan’s Ransom than the brooding weight of Heathen Cross, but it refuses to be a retread. Payne’s bass remains the band’s sly center—anchoring riffs and punctuating turns with sly timing—while guitarists Luke Hatton and Chris Coss deliver twin-lead work that balances NWOBHM gallop with modern clarity. Drummer Ash Baker propels the record with crisp, dynamic hits: he slips between mid-tempo stompers and faster gallops with ease, giving each track the momentum it needs without overplaying.

Songwriting is the record’s strongest suit. The album offers a well-judged mix of mid-tempo burners, faster cuts, and widescreen epics, ensuring pace and variety across its runtime. Melodies latch quickly; choruses are immediate without feeling formulaic. There’s a measured theatricality to several tracks—the kind that invites fist-pumping in a small club and headlining festival slots alike—while other songs trade in more introspective phrasing, creating an emotive balance.

Production favors clarity over sheer brute force. Guitars have presence and definition, Payne’s bass is audible and characterful, and Conklin sits proudly in the mix without dominating it. The result is a warm, powerful sound that highlights arrangement detail—harmonies, counter-melodies, and vocal phrasing—rather than burying them under excessive compression. It’s modern-sounding without losing the organic punch that long-term fans will appreciate.

If there’s a critique to level, it’s that at moments the album clings a little too close to familiar templates. A few songs might have benefited from a sharper surprise or a more adventurous arrangement to break expectations. But even where the band treads known ground, they do so with conviction and craft, and Conklin’s presence turns potential familiarity into something invigorating.

Never A Prophet In Your Own Land is, in short, a triumphant record from a band comfortable in its identity yet hungry for progression. It showcases Cloven Hoof at a creative high point: a stable lineup, strong songwriting, and a singer whose world-class performance elevates material across the board. For fans of classic heavy metal that values melody, drama, and muscular execution, this album is a rewarding listen—and a potent reminder that seasoned bands can still surprise.
