Norwegian metal scene is notorious for several issues, but it should be praised for its loyalty and devotion to underground rather than its extreme methods or the church burning and the suicide or stabbing habits. And for every Euronymous or Fenriz and their enormous shadow, there are many unsung heroes of the extreme sound that should be mentioned more often and with more respect. Such as Apollyon (Ole Jørgen Moe) the multi-instrumentalist that played bass in Immortal, guitar and drums in Lamented Souls, bass guitar and vocals in Cadaver, guitar in Gorgoroth and vocals, guitar, bass and drums in Aura Noir. And while time passes so rapidly it’s been a couple of years since we’ve heard any recorded from Apollyon, with his last release being 2018’s ‘Aura Noire’  by Aura Noir.
Now we are very happy to see him returning to the studio along with Olav Knutsen aka Bestial Tormentor (Inferno, Lamented Souls) and Fenriz (Darkthrone) creating the cult heroes Coffin Storm.
It’s not that suddenly Apollyon called his friend and asked him to join his new project or something as both Fenriz and Apollyon grew up together in Kolbotn, Norway in the ’80s, where it was also the place that Bestial Tormentor and Apollyon started playing together a bit later in the ’90s, when they started off playing doom together in Lamented Souls. This was a band that also featured Simen Hestnaes aka ICS Vortex (who you all should recognise as a member of Dimmu Borgir and Borknagar).
So what we got here with Coffin Storm is actually is Lamented Souls (the underground band that effectively ended in the early 2000s), but nearly two decades later Apollyon and Bestial Tormentor kind of revive under a new moniker. And as seeking to make it a 100% Kolbotn project, they asked Fenriz to join as vocalist in songs were already the duo have written in the veins of Doom and classic Heavy Metal as in Lamented Souls.
Coffin Storm delivers 6 tracks about 45 minutes long and whoever seeks a hybrid of Darkthrone meets Aura Noir they might feel disappointed as the final result is raw and unrefined but walks in different musical roads. Yet it’s more than obvious that they will find similarities though, especially as Fenriz sings with the same way as in Darkthrone’s traditional metal albums. It’s just the way he is; he can’t pretend or do something different…and in the end of the day they will love this effort.
“Arcana Storming” features 6 strong dark songs, daring to become hymns of underground Metal that will bring in mind Candlemass and Pentagram, (especially “Epicus Doomicus Metallicus” that the band members confessed in an interview that they had in their mind when they composed the album), but also early Kreator -in faster moments- and definitely Celtic Frost.
