2018’s ‘Overtures of Blasphemy’ was a small triumph. No one asked from Deicide to reconquer the throne of Death Metal but Benton and his gang continue releasing dynamic albums as if they were in their 30’s. Deicide recorded ‘Banished by Sin’ with Jeramie Kling and Smoke & Mirrors Productions in Spring Hill, Florida. Produced by Deicide and engineered by Kling and Nordberg, between November 2022 and May 2023, the album Is already out since April 26 via Reigning Phoenix Music, featuring founders Glen Benton (bass/ vocals) and Steve Asheim (drums), as well as Kevin Quirion (guitars) and Taylor Nordberg (guitars). Let’s make something straight from the start: the artwork cover sucks, but on one hand as Benton said on several interviews, it will make some great t-shirts and a nice banner for the live shows, and on the other hand it doesn’t affect not even for a slice the music part of the album. Furthermore, Glen Benton’s respond to AI Artwork Backlash was: “I Don’t Give a Sh*t What Anybody Else Thinks”, leaving this dirty job to his new label, which in this and only in this part, didn’t handle it so well (speaking about the fans not the band as Benton said in an interview in The Brutally Delicious Podcast: “Well, people don’t understand that the album cover that we did, it was done with Photoshop and with some A.I., but it’s a more modern version. It’s like Legion—When I did the Legion album cover, computers were still fucking new. Nobody knew anything about three-dimensional artwork or any shit like that. And I was the first person to even fucking fuck with that when I designed the Legion album cover. Now I’ve been in the computers and all that shit since they all came about. So I may be ahead of a lot of people when it comes to computers. I have two iMacs and MacBook Pro and iPad Pro. So I’m a little versed with the whole computer age and in Photoshop and all that stuff and that. “I like to do something different and provocative. And I know the whole A.I. thing, everybody’s [up in arms about it]… But it was meant to stir. People don’t understand. It’s a modernization of… It’s a sign of the time that we’re in. People just can’t—Their first [reaction] is, like, ‘Oh, he’s trying to put all of us artists out of work. And I’ll be stuck drawing penises in men’s bathrooms for the rest of my life.’ So everybody’s up in arms and thinking that this is the end of the fucking world. And it’s really ridiculous, man. It’s just a form of art and expression. So I think people should just really stop being ridiculous and accept it for what it is, man. It’s a sign of the times.”). Check also the artwork of Kerry King’s new album so there you go we found the guilty one! So after the big fuck off to AI artwork cover, let’s now focus on music. I say we have a strong lineup that has the perfect chemistry and that is clearly audible to the final result. A well oiled war machine full of hate, anger, hostility and a barrage of riffs combined with tied build up in every song, intense tempo changes while some of the best ideas that Benton had in years are here with hymns like the anthemic “Sever The Tongue”, “A Trinity Of None”, the cheesy themed “Bury The Cross…With Your Christ”, “Ritual Defied” that has great guitars, and while “I Am I…A Curse Of Death” seem a kind of predictable, I really dig the thrashy “Faithless” or the title track which is a killer masking “Banished By Sin” an album that can look straight into the eyes of Deicide’s classics (even not in its whole entirety though). Extra kudos for the excellent crispy production that let songs breathe without sounding too compressed or “plastic”.
