I dare to say that I’m not too late for this party as Boston-based band Final Gasp release their debut album “Mourning Moon” on Relapse Records on September 22, so probably I’m right on time. I never heard before any of their two previous EPs—2019’s “Baptism of Desire” and 2021’s “Haunting Whisper”; both released via Triple B, before this killer, so they got me by surprise from the vet first moment. While it’s easy to recognize their influences from Samhain, Killing Joke to Danzig and the relation between their sound and the sound of Tribulation or Unto Others. Still I can hear a Bloodclot, TSOL, later Prong and Cro-Mags connection that makes the album have so much charm and incredible inspiration as it captures the best elements from Gothic, Punk, Hardcore and Heavy Metal. “The whole record has to do with loss,” vocalist Jake Murphy explains. “The title comes from that anxious feeling you have when you go to bed and you’re thinking about everything all at once. You’re regretting decisions you’ve made—or didn’t make—and you’re up all night thinking about it.

Final Gasp recorded Mourning Moon in Philadelphia with producer Arthur Rizk (Ghostmane, Kreator, Cavalera Conspiracy, Poison Ruin, Sumerlands). The crystal clear production is one of its highlights along with the strong, sentimental personal lyrics and Jake Murphy’s vocal range as well as very melodic ability and expressive style from anger to sorrow, or from aggression to helplessness, always giving what the song needed. A record with a dozen of catchy songs with harmonic riffs, memorable melodies and excellent performance, “Mourning Moon” is a melancholic trip about loss: “The whole record has to do with loss,” Murphy explains. “The title comes from that anxious feeling you have when you go to bed and you’re thinking about everything all at once. You’re regretting decisions you’ve made—or didn’t make-and you’re up all night thinking about it.”

Murphy continues: “I hope when people listen to this record, they feel something and actually get something out of it rather than just putting it on as background music,” he adds. “I feel like it’s something that everyone can relate to.”

Highlights: “Climax Infinity”, “Homebound”, “Temptation”, “Mourning Moon” and “Rows Of Heaven”. Buy it!
