Hellbutcher – Hellbutcher

Genre: Black/Thrash
Country: Sweden
Label: Metal Blade Records

Nifelheim was/(or is, as they never split-up officially) a legendary Swedish Black/Thrash band formed in 1990 by the twin brothers Erik and Per Gustavsson, under the stage names Tyrant and Hellbutcher (Tyrant and Hellbutcher are known in Sweden as “Bröderna Hårdrock”, which translates to “The Hard Rock Brothers”, although it could also be translated as “The Heavy Metal Brothers” since “Hårdrock” is used to define all kinds of heavy music in Swedish, without borrowing English expressions like “Heavy Metal”). The band is known for their “old school” style of black metal. So while Nifelheim is on hold, we could say that from the debris of the glorious Nifelheim Hellbutcher arises. Hellbutcher as a front man, together with guitarist Necrophiliac (Mordant), Iron Beast bassist Eld, and Martin “Devastator” Axenrot (Bloodbath, Opeth and ex-Nifelheim) he founded the band under his moniker. “The core of Hellbutcher encapsulates the true essence of metal,” he declares. “We are METAL, striving to refine and evolve our music and image to become the purest and heaviest among all extreme metal bands throughout history. Disregarding predefined trends and fashions, we will persist in the authentic path that metal was meant to follow! “

Lyrically as you may already thought there’s a pure evil aura, through simplicity and blasphemy. Musically a full throttle assault featuring raging, frenzy thrashing lead guitars, hellish shredding guitar solos, powerful choruses and insane catastrophic drums. Some mid-tempo paced parts here and there gives extra respiration to the listener, while the song structure is closer to thrash and the atmosphere 100% rock ’n roll, without losing any of its black metal ferocity and foundation that Hellbutcher is devoted to; “I play black metal. I have done that for four decades now, so I must obviously be possessed in some sense,” he says.

Recording in various locations around Sweden, such as Devastator’s own Red And Black Hall drum studio and Iron Beast’s Chrome studios, and producing and mastering everything themselves – “No need for an outside producer since we knew exactly how our band should sound” – it is a record that wins easily the title of the album of the year of the sub-genre it serves. Pure unrelenting Black/Thrash mayhem that worships the legacy and the spirit of Venom, Bathory, Iron Maiden, Exciter, Motörhead, Mercyful Fate.

Neck-breaking highlights: “Perdition”, “Possessed By The Devil’s Flame” (some brilliant N.W.O.B.H.M. elements here), “Death’s Rider” and “The Sword of Wrath”.
