Whoever digs horror films then he definitely knew what to except from a band with a moniker like House by the Cemetery. Some may think that it is another project by Rogga Johannson meaning by that saying that you don’t lose a lot of you miss it. But those who follow the work of the swede guitarist know that every riff, every solo, every song and every album matters for Rogga. This project one of the so many he runs or just participates formed in 2021 and blend perfectly Swedish and American death metal featuring vocalist Mike Hrubovcak who was in Monstrosity, Azure Amote, Vile and currently also is in Hypoxia. Their sophomore album doesn’t follow the debut’s Rise of the Roten fast formula as it follows a mid-paced tempos and crushing riffs pattern with retro vibes and style creating a furious soundtrack for horror films without sounding cinematic still having an eerie atmosphere throughout the entirety of the album. The Mortuary Hauntings is the perfect example on how to sound old school and contemporary at the same time with straightforward song writing. The sound is modern and damn no plastic and the production is clean and it keeps the balance on all instruments. Of course it doesn’t lack any of rawness or brutality. The bass lines are thick and audible despite the many blast beats and all musicians execute perfectly and honest without being ultra-technical or something; nor that it needed to. The album was recorded by House by the Cemetery, mixed by Ronnie Björnström at EAP Productions and Håkan Stuvemark at Necrotic Audio Productions. Stuvemark also handled the mastering. The stunning cover artwork by Colombian illustrator Felipe Mora (Critical Defiance, Consumption, Mortify).
Highlights: “Cadavers Emerge”, “The Realm of the Cursed”, “Opening the Gates of Hell” and “The Book of Eibon”.
The Mortuary Hauntings is 100% guarantee suggestion for fans of Six Feet Under, early Cannibal Corpse, and old school Swedish Death Metal aficionados who bravely eat meat and potatoes most days of the week.
