Genre: Heavy Metal
If Sortilege was the French answer to Judas Priest then Meurtrières is France’s corresponding to Paul Di Annos’ Iron Maiden. Well this rather sloppy and incomplete characterization would perfectly match to the description that says that Meurtrières is a heavy/speed outfit from France that sounds like if Iron Maiden traveled back a year in time to 1981 Paris, met up with Blaspheme or Sortilege and had a jam session. But enough with designations and outlines. If you love the punkish side of N.W.O.B.H.M. blended with medieval aesthetic and Iron Maiden galloping rhythm, less complicated Mercyful Fate, Judas Priest riffs and the French ‘80s scene influences, then you should check these guys from Lyon. You just can’t ignore the use of French language from the front woman Fleur, which fits so perfectly with the context and the vibe of the music. The rhythm section is tight, while especially the drumming is excellent providing a great performance. One of the best parts of this 5 songs and almost 30 minutes long EP is that it never breaks the atmosphere; an epic feeling is present up to its last second. If you believe that Chevalier’s “Destiny Calls” was last year’s breakthrough then you just can’t miss this newest jewel in the crown of French Heavy Metal.
