‘Hellish Expectations’, is the 6th studio album by Cleveland’s filthiest and nastiest hell raisers MIDNIGHT, out already about a month ago on Metal Blade Records (8th of March 2024). It might sound cliché but I don’t give a damn so I will say it; this album is the one that the band should release after the glorious 2017’s ‘Sweet Death & Ecstasy’. I don’t claim that both ‘Rebirth by Blasphemy’ (2020) and ‘Let There Be Witchery’ (2022) are weak yet ‘Hellish Expectations’ is much stronger (damn) straight forward wise, in terms of hostility, dirt and lust. The compositions are like 10 iron fists punching your face and yes the only 25 minute long duration is a determining factor and a crucial reason why this record is so fucking awesome. We are living in an era where so much information so much music and releases and so little time to integrate and invest time and feelings upon an album or a band…

On the other hand probably also Athenar (underground icon and one army behemoth of Black ‘n Roll)  should have walked this path of overproducing and recording several of countless splits Eps and albums in order to revisit his roots while the Whitespade album he created to tribute Motorhead’s legendary Ace Of Spades LP was so vivid and refreshing for him inspiring him furthermore as a way to write once again on top notch level, after over two decades in music industry, an album so crispy as the blackened heavy metal rumblings of ‘Hellish Expectations’.

“It’s a knuckle-dragger with a fat cutoff,” notes Athenar, “Probably the most concise and straight to the point MIDNIGHT album to date, and all written in a weekend.” That’s the spirit of the good old fashioned bad ass metal, just like it was in the 80’s. No fillers. No whining. No bitching. No crying. No matters because no one cares!

MIDNIGHT are on excellent shape and l really can’t wait until the dates that they will visit Athens and Thessaloniki so as to see them live.

Highlights: ‘Masked and Deadly’, ‘Expect Total Hell’, ‘Slave of the Blade’ , ‘Mercyless Slaughtor’ and ‘F.O.A.L.’ (Fuck Off and Live).
