SKAGS is a new band and they invite us in a space journey through their sophomore full length entitled ‘Year 2200’: ‘Embark on an interstellar odyssey with our upcoming album “Year 2200.”  Humanity teeters on the edge of extinction, and the saga unfolds as we explore the cosmos in search of a new home. Join us on an imaginary trip in about 200 years from now. Humanity on the brink, Earth dying. The Elite escape to Mars, leaving others behind. A signal, panic, an asteroid, and a united Earth. Discovering hope on a new exoplanet, “A New Home.” Each song a chapter, a continuum of narrative. This album is an invitation to immerse yourself. Sit back, sip a drink, read the lyrics, and let the story unfold.’The ambitious Athenians started as a cover band around 2017 playing in various music small venues in their home city. In 2019, they made a brave and foreseeable decision to write their own material; Helpful they had already many original ideas to deal with. As the band’s members come from different musical backgrounds ranging from classical music to extreme metal, blues, jazz, progressive rock/metal, and even Greek folk songs you can expect a variety in their music, something important in order to keep the listener from the torture of boredom especially if we speak for a concept album. The quintet thankfully has managed to compose interesting tracks with beautiful female vocals (from Spyretta Driva) bringing in mind mid-late 90’s and the madness with The Gathering and Anneke van Giersbergen, -which while I never was a fan still I could see why people loved her and her voice, creating a trippy and atmospheric environment for their story to be unfold. Yet I would prefer a bit more heavy guitars or using fewer keyboards that of course on the other hand fits well in their modern alternative/progressive sound and the narrating of their science fiction scenario based lyrics. Nice ideas, thick bass lines and clean, crystal clear production and the songs ‘People on Mars’ featuring Greek rapper named axer something that normally would annoy me but truth be told it fits well in the song. ’18 in a Vessel’ and ‘Epilogue’ (that Sotirios Angelidis sings) are remarkable too. ‘Year 2200’ just sounds closer to rock/pop that progressive rock to my ears, but definitely interesting and trippy enough to make you listen it to its entirety than pushing the skip button all the time… Fans of The Gathering, Porcupine Tree and Anathema will probably love them!!! No, not probably, surely and no, not just love them they will adore them in the near future! Not my cup of tea but fans of the genre should check immediately.
