Undoubtedly, any recent mentioning on the Athenian epic heavy metallers Achelous, is certainly accompanied by positive comments, and this is what their upward and creative compositional course has to do with. So in this certain review you might read words of similar acceptance that have less to do with my enthusiasm for the band than with the maturity that governs it in their latest discography.
It may be that their debut still remains my favorite work from them and their 2nd effort didn’t actually win me (at least as I would have expected), yet nevetheless in “Tower Of High Sorcery” I left myself on a musical journey full of magic, heroism and drama. “Dragonlance’s” obvious influence on your ideation creates nostalgia by spinning into your brain with every listen. Oriental touches mix with wonderful female vocals, folk passages that strongly strengthen the epic element, heavy metal at its best as we learned and love it. The presence of Harry “Tyrant” Conklin “gives” another star to this excellent work, emphasizing to us that they have achieved something good so far along their path.
Nice words and praising are not easy to credit in this certain sub-genre and they are hard to be earned. Achelous knows it well, but also knows how to do it and we have a lot to see from them in the future.
“Tower of High Sorcery” is a gift for fans of the genre, filled with sounds they love. In short, Achelous are a band that doesn’t surprise stylistically. Instead, they decided to shows progress in their music instead, something that is clearly closer to their personalities and hearts. It’s a record that grabs you from hello and you understand right from the artwork cover that something great has happened here. An album that makes you optimistic about our music’s future and expect even better and fighting metal from guys who love what they do.
