Adversarial – Death, Endless Nothing and the Black Knife of Nihilism

Genre: Blackened Death Metal
Country: Canada
Label: Dark Descent Records
Year: 2015

Still crossing the path of misanthropic thoughts and paranoid sounds, Adversarial from Canada have returned to claim our heads. Five years after their debut, they present us their new album, which is entitled “Death, Endless Nothing and the Black Knife of Nihilism” and is released through the American company Dark Descent Records.

There is no rest for the wicked. Everything is fluid. There’s not a single second you can relax and catch your breath or be able to hear your thoughts. The record is extremely chaotic, like finding yourself in the eye of the hurricane, without having the opportunity to escape from it. The atmosphere created is proportional to the atmosphere Hell has, especially on 4th floor, third cauldron, left. The vocals are otherworldly. The blast beats are relentless. I guess the band’s drummer is a machine; there’s no other way you can explain the speed of the kicks and blasts. Your blood pressure reaches 200 on each track. The compositions are extremely heavy (and obviously improved compared with their debut) producing a shockwave that will leave you with psychological problems. The riff is governed by a wide range, as every track is different; though you might think that what’s played is amateurish in a way, you’re totally wrong. It is evident that the members know exactly which their part is; the result is excellent and professional.

Despite the complicated character of the compositions, the result is satisfactory. This is obviously owed to the better production they have in this album (comparing it with the previous ones) which on the one highlights the instruments without burying any of them in the background, but on the other hand is quite unconventional, so that there are moments that you cannot distinguish which song is which.

In addition to all that, since all black / death bands that respect themselves and the purpose they serve have long titles, then that’s the case for Adversarial, as well. This is first evidenced by the record’s title, and by the imaginative unholy song titles, for example: «Cursed Blades Cast Upon the Slavescum of Christ», «Lone Wresting Hymns to the Warmoon of Chaos» and other such blasphemous titles.

The album cover is excellent. Smothered in red-orange colors, there stands Satan Invertedcross, yes, the one from the well-known family, in the form of Ripper, with a scythe at hand and surrounded by skulls, apparently of infidels.

This record is aimed to those devoted to the extreme genre, as it is not something that a common listener would choose to listen to. You’ll have to be trained to fully engulf the record’s atmosphere.
