Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz. The name comes from the Koine Greek αμέθυστος amethystos from α- a-, “not” and μεθύσκω (Ancient Greek) methysko / μεθώ metho (Modern Greek), “intoxicate”, a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. Ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. Amethyst, a semiprecious stone, is often used in jewelry.
Out of the ashes of (early Germany-later Switzerland) based Midas Touch (not the Technical Speed/Thrash Metal Swedish band from Uppsala that have recorded for Noise Records back in the late 80’s) Amethyst is a new Heavy Metal band from Switzerland, formed in 2020. They play pure Heavy Metal, heavily inspired by the sound and spirit in general of the golden era between 1979 and 1981. Rock Knights is Amethyst‘s debut 4-song tape, out on Jawbreaker Records in March 2023.This vintage sounding Heavy Metal/Hard Rock has a plethora of with N.W.O.B.H.M. influences, some Heavy Load references, brave does of Thin Lizzy melodies, proto-metal elements and guitar driven hymns that if you add the haunting vocals (with a hint of central Europe accent), the solid rhythm section and the overwhelming natural and organic atmosphere, then you get a full picture of what these newcomers from Switzerland manage to create. As this is their debut EP, we must expect some really really huge things from them in the near future. Lovers of 70’s analog production, vinyl (and cassette) junkies, fans of classic N.W.O.B.H.M. (especially digging Cloven Hoof, Pagan Altar, Angel Witch, Quartz and Witchfynde), collectors of obscure F.W.O.S.H.M. albums and some modern Swedish bands like Black Trip, Century, Tyrann etc. will just adore it. It comes with 8 page booklet with biography, lyrics and pictures. Limited to 500 copies.
