Amorphis – Live at Helsinki Ice Hall

I have this feeling that all live albums released in this past year and a half, should be treated differently. Before the pandemic, I rarely found interest in live releases. Now, in the absence of live shows, it’s like an oasis in the desert. Can you recall your feelings towards such records when started listening to this kind of music? They were an opportunity to hear a band performing, since you still wasn’t able going to concerts. Or you treated them as another kind of best-of, an opportunity getting to know a band. Seems like the timing is right for “Live at Helsinki Ice Hall”, by Amorphis to be released. This particular live was recorded back in December 2019, in band’s birthplace, Helsinki. In fact, the area where recorded is of great importance, as all big names of the scene have also played there (Iron Maiden, Metallica, Deep Purple amongst others). In this double cd, you can enjoy Finns’ that night’s full live show for “Queen of Time” tour. It’s actually a good quality record, so all tracks included are more than welcomed. The band managed to fit there some of their previous hits as well. I say some because they now have a wider discography, and there are several songs that we would like to hear too. Band’s performance is excellent, while different approach on some of the pieces is interesting. In total, they stay close to original versions of tracks, full of passion, as expected in a live show. I’ve been listening to this one stoically, eagerly waiting for the moment when live shows will be back!
