It is damn too easy to review an Annihilator album. You click on “Reviews” file on your desktop and you pick out the review of the previous Annihilator record. For example I found my text for “For the Demented” and I could easily just change a couple of song titles and my work would end there. I suppose that Waters is doing something like this with the riffs or the lyrics…but damn it I really love this band and I gave it another chance to surprise me. But it didn’t…Once again the guitar work is more than brilliant. The solos are impressive and will make you want to break your neck while air-guitaring like a teenager. Yet the song writing is rather weak or better saying not so strong or equally strong as the guitars. I don’t want to say more about the lyrics that are almost naïve if not stupid…The vocal lines are pretty good and I know that most don’t appreciate Waters voice but I prefer it than Padden’s that was definitely more than awful! “Ballistic, Sadistic” is the band’s finest work since 2005’s “Schizo Deluxe”, but I guess that this statement is actually the denudation of how weak was their discography all these years when repetitive ideas were mixed with 3 or 4 really great songs on every album that actually was a collection of killer solos and reheated food… Waters is undoubtedly a very gifted guitarist but his leads sound too boring and tedious. Take the best two songs from this year album: “Lip Service” and “Dressed Up For Evil”. “Lip Service” is somehow like a “Knight Jumps Queen” part.2 same situation on “Dressed Up For Evil” and “Word Salad”…But this happens when “Ballistic, Sadistic” is written, performed, mixed, engineered and produced by Jeff. You know the results…On the other hand Annihilator on stage is an astonishing. So, even though we can understand why this whole thing doesn’t work, and one track mind Waters knows it too, you can assume that nothing will change to make any notable difference compared to whatever came before it during these last 15+ years and this thing will continue ‘till the end of this course. We still love you Jeff !
