Tenth album for Danish thrashers, as also revealed by album’s title. We should definitely mention Morten’s (Stutzer) passing, two years ago. He was guitarist, founding member, as well as Michael’s brother. Morten’s passing could be an unpleasant turn for the band after this incident, but Artillery, and especially Michael, felt that they should continue, honoring this way the late Morten. He has been replaced by Kraen Meier. “X” is the natural sequel to their previous release (three years ago) “The Face of Fear”. Melodic thrash metal, sticking to details compositions, speed full, maybe a little bit more groove this time. Since 2012, when Michael Bastholm Dahl joined the band, I have the feeling that songwriting was uplifted to a whole new level. He can sing with such a comfort throughout all Artillery’s repertoire. Melodic, angry, emotional, he’s adapting to the requirements of each and every song. Ballad, “The Ghost of Me”, is placed right where it should have been, thus in the middle of the album, like an informal if you wish “break”. It’s also an opportunity to enjoy another side of Dahl. This third period of Artillery, seems to be the longest one, most stable, most productive, and quite substantial. Records like “X” are quality material and show the way for anyone who wants to thrive on melodic thrash. Knowing just what to except, in Artillery’s case, don’t bother at all.
