There could no better start of the concert season for the new year. At The Gates visited our country for the third time in total, but this was their first gig in Thessaloniki.

The night began the Athenians Revenge of the Giant Face and their strongly played mathcore, based on Dillinger Escape Plan and Converge’s recent discs. With their very good stage presence and them being great musicians, they warmed up the audience which had already started to fill the place.

The second support act, coming from Athens was well, called Cerebrum, with demanding technical death metal tunes, fully satisfied the fans of the genre, receiving a great applause by the audience at the end of their set.

The time was ripe for the Swedish group At The Gates to come up on stage. The members of the band appeared on stage while the introduction of their new album “At War With Reality” came from the speakers of the club, while the crowd franticly applauded! The song “Death and the Labyrinth” marked the beginning of their appearance. However, the next “Slaughter of The Soul” from the homonymous colossal album, marked the beginning of the mosh pit (even though the band had a little misunderstanding at the beginning of the track). As they carried on, they performed a nice combination of classic songs with several doses of the new album, which did not seem to disappoint anyone. And why would they disappoint, when all tracks were performed in flawless executions (although somewhat slower than their studio performances)? Amongst others, we listened to “Cold”, “Terminal Spirit Disease”, “Suicide Nation”, and personal favorites “Nausea”, “Blinded by Fear”. The night was sealed with “Night Eternal”.

In conclusion, it was a professional performance, with extreme –at points a little dull – sound throughout the concert, while the crowd’s participation was intense, especially on the band’s older tracks. The only negative point was the short duration of the concert as the band only played for 75 minutes.
