When I jump into a band that mixes traditional heavy metal with black metal always my mind travels back to mid 90’s, when Bewitched from Umeå, Sweden released a couple of very good albums like “Diabolical Desecration” (1996) , “Pentagram Prayer” (1997) and “At the Gates of Hell” (1999) before I leave them. Bewitcher although have a close enough name shouldn’t be confused with them, as they are coming from Portland Oregon and made their debut with the same title only 5 years ago making a small noise around their name. Their sound is much more evil and speedy flirting with black/ death ‘n roll. “Cursed Be Thy Kingdom” is their third effort. Compared to their previous studio album Under the Witching Cross that they decide to slow down a bit now they make a step further and have more traditional elements in their songs leaving out everything that should categorize them into extreme sound. They play fast, but in a proto-speed way, in the veins of Tank and as they have a lot of NWOBHM and Judas Priest worshipping parts and guitars, it seems that they have invested on riffs rather that adrenaline. As they don’t try to sound old-school but they subconsciously damn are, wise enough they keep up with their times and sometimes the sound like Tribulation minus the gothic vibe. Can this formula work? Well truth be told Bewitcher deliver an almost excellent collection of a dozen of songs that can shake your bones and break your necks. Highlights: “Electric Phantoms,” “Cursed Be Thy Kingdom,” “Satanick Magick Attack,” “Mystifier (White Night City),” and “The Widow’s Blade.”
