These days three of the best and legendary black metal acts in the planet, Mayhem, Watain and Rotting Christ are touring the US, as part of the ‘Black Metal Warfare Part II’ tour. A fan of Metal Invader and great philhellene, Jon Walters attended the show and conveyed his impressions to us.
“A 6 hour road trip to Dallas is well worth it for this amazing line up. Insane to see this once in a lifetime chance; to see these three bands in the same venue from overseas. At 6 p.m. I arrived at Gas Monkey (the venue) and as I was looking through the locked front door, I saw a vast room and instantly wondered about the sound quality. In my experience, the smaller, more compact rooms have better sound. I saw the guys from Watain walking in a group through the lot, probably to find a restaurant of sorts. I saluted them with devil horns and so some of them did in return. I didn’t want to rush up and bother them on their hunt. Well, the doors opened at 19:00 and with around 30 people in line; I begun thinking there would be a small turnout that night.
Bummer… Dissection was playing in the monitors as I walked in. I grabbed my overpriced beer, and headed to the merch table. Shirts and patches were very nicely priced, so I bought a Rotting Christ patch as the crowds of metalheads started really pouring in. Now that’s a fucking party. Soon, the sounds of Rotting Christ came on, so I rushed to the front. The sound was overpowering, amazing. They performed like warriors on stage, inviting the crowd to chant with them, like we were their hordes. They performed great songs, newer and old. Even did a song off from “Thy Mighty Contract”. A very rare occurrence for me. Very impressive.
Next came the mighty Watain, with a very dark setting on stage, with pig-heads on stakes, the smell of rotting blood in the air. They had impeccable sound as well, the vocalist and mainman Erik was so full of energy and power. At one point, he dowsed the crowd in blood during a ritual he was doing on stage. A very original and evil performance.
Last but never least, headliners of the tour, Mayhem. It’s an amazing sight to see a band of such age and historic past, still with their fire burning. The sound seemed a little low-end, but after the first two bands, could have been my hearing. They performed many of their originals from the Dead era and proved to the audience they can bring Mayhem to the masses.
All in all it was an amazing show. I wish Rotting Christ had a longer set list (didn’t perform “Non Serviam”) at this show, and there were terribly expensive beer prices. I can’t be selfish, though 30$ to see this lineup was a dream come true, and definitely a show to remember.
With respect, Jon.”
