Having expelled the stigma of using Thin Lizzy’s name since their previous record, exonerating the crowd that wanted to listen to them (having Time as an ally, as well), Black Star Riders came back with a very good album. Frankly, compositions as “Turn In Your Arms”, “You Little Liar” and “Charlie I Gotta Go” (having always Thin Lizzy as a base and Lynott’s spirit lingering) gave me chills. Great guitars, solos from an era with Nick Raskulinecz’s distinctive clean production avoiding retro sounds, and Warwick probably at his best. Of course, “Soldiertown” is the best composition; “Emerald’s” child that could cause a riot if it had been released under Thin Lizzy’s name as a rare track hidden in a master tape. Some divvy refrains in good tracks, such as “Bullet Blues” or “Finest Hour”, spoil the overall picture. Simplicity, experience, inspiration. If only there was some more authenticity…
