Probably you agree with our opinion, that Chicago is one of those cities where metal never grew big. Still that doesn’t mean that these fellas coming from the capital of IL, is a couple of unknown ones. Blacklyst is from this cast of bands that only one release even if we are talking about a caste that was recorded in 1991 is enough to make their name written in the books of heavy metal history.‘Liars, Killers & Master Thieves’ was a well-known cassette demo album among US Metal fans and collectors and genre’s fanatics, featuring members of Windy Citys Metal heroes Amulance (lead guitarist Bob Luman and drummer Eric Wedow). This name should ring a bell to you because Amulance’s debut full length from 1989 entitled “Feel the Pain” is a cult gem and is an album you should definitely check out as soon as possible. Blacklyst starts from the same point where Amulance stopped. ‘Liars, Killers & Master Thieves’ is a fine example of US Power based on brilliant production, marvelous songwriting, delivered with excellent instrumentation and top-quality vocals. Even though we can’t somehow erase the ballad “The Street” that I just can’t find any reason to be recorded or placed in the same track listing with so many gems, still it is a nice song written in the veins of Tesla and Skid Row but can’t stand next to the other tracks on the album. But of course still the album could be placed among the best underground US Metal tapes ever recorded. Hyperbolic or not it’s up to you to see it or better saying to hear it in this well crafted deluxe cd version by Lost Realm Records. The first print was supposed to be back in 2004 by Iron Glory Records, which was finally never made. Now with the help of bassist/vocalist Mark Schwenk, Lost Realm compiled a total of 14 songs (‘Liars, Killers & Master Thieves’ cassette + demo songs), together with a 20-page CD booklet, comprising band biography, song lyrics and rare photos. There’s an eighties atmosphere all over this release and some magnificent riffs here and there that captures an entire era where US Power was never larger than life in terms of popularity, but was definitely the genre that delivered some cult jewels of extreme sound. It was easy for me to write down all the details and the information that the cd’s booklet provided me for the band’s history but I thought it would be more fun for all of you that will buy the album to read it and make the trip to their past alongside with the hearing of it. Highlights are the opening “Sign of the Times”, “Death Row”, “Metal Knights”, “AntiChrist” and “Armageddon”.
