Bloodbath is a Swedish death metal supergroup from Stockholm, formed in 1998 as you probably all know. The band has released four full-length albums along with the new one “Grand Morbid Funeral”. It’s called a supergroup because it consists of members from bands such as Katatonia (Anders Nystrom, Jonas Renske) Opeth (Martin Axenrot) Nick Holmes (Paradise Lost) and Per Eriksson who was the guitar technician both for Bloodbath and Katatonia.
Before Nick Holmes’s arrival to the band, Mikael Akerfeldt left the band because he wanted to focus on his other band Opeth. So, when Mikael left the band, there were many questions about, who’s going to be the one to replace him… And then, some time ago Bloodbath announced that Nick Holmes from Paradise Lost has joined the band. Well everybody was left with a mouth wide open with this one, because many remember when Nick years ago said that, he couldn’t go on with brutal vocals because they damage his voice. Anyway, since the music is more important to Bloodbath’s sound if Holmes’ vocals are as good as we can hear them during the album also in their live performances, everything will be great.
“Grand Morbid Funeral” is going to blow up your mind if you like old school death metal. From the very first song to the last one this album is full of energy. Classic Bloodbath riffs in every song combined well with Holmes’s voice. I think this album is more traditional than their lateset releases. So, Nick’s voice matches perfectly to this one. The production of the album is “old” with much bulk in it. Blackheim and Eriksson collaborate perfectly to receive a hell-ish result in this album with dark and heavy riffs. Also Axenrot’s ideas on the drum parts sound a bit old school too in this album, with groove and thrash parts where needed. This album sounds more doomy and actually sounds a bit Celtic Frost-like – Monotheist era-, in many ways to my ears. This is a great comeback for Bloodbath. And if you let the music just flow, Bloodbath will smash your ears to death for sure.
Songs I liked most in this album are: I’d say the whole album, but if I had to choose I would say …again the whole album!!!
