2021 started with very bad omens for musicians and fans who were nurtured during the 2000s with extreme metal coming directly from the North. One of these bands should be Children of Bodom for most. Alexi Laiho, only being 40 years old, passed away at the end of 2020, something that no one could ignore, no matter their personal interests. His contribution to music is unquestionable. Shortly after the dissolution of COB in 2019, he brought to life Bodom After Midnight, with whom he planned many things. One of them was the release of “Paint the Sky With Blood”.
Alexi Laiho’s swansong with Bodom After Midnight, is essentially a “renaissance” of Children of Bodom, with a slightly more thrashing, “keyless” approach and the special technique that characterized COB. The only tracks they managed to complete until the tragic day, were three: the self titled one, whose official video is already in public, “Payback’s a Bitch” and a cover of Dissection’s “Where Dead Angels Lie”. Damn the tragic irony in the latter one. Bodom After Midnight actually gave a breath of life to a musician who, let’s not lie, had left way behind him his glorious creations, such as “Follow the Reaper”, “Hate Crew Deathroll”, “Something Wild” and so. Being so charismatic, he motivated many children to take on the guitar in their hands, but this somehow started to fall apart around 2011, as well as everything else that brought the situation to its current state. “Paint the Sky With Blood” foretold new things and would leave no room for ignorance if it was finally made as a full length album as planned. Nevertheless, it is the last performance of one of the most important guitarists of the last twenty years. Let’s play it as loud as possible, to say goodbye to a legend the way he deserves it.
There are not many things to say in fact, rather than to weave his praise once again. The reaper’s absence from the artwork, hits quite hard.
