I began listening to Caelestia (ex-Me & Myself) with very low expectations and without waiting anything special. Maybe I had in mind that I will be listening to another band with female vocals with the classic sound of Lacuna Coil and Nightwish. Instead I was listening to a band with a contemporary sound, extreme-which is a lot closer to my daily preferences- with well worked compositions that I would gladly add to my ipod playlist, that doesn’t come off from my ears.
Dimitra Vintsou has an exceptional voice and she definitely adds to each track a dramatic flair, which in combination with Nikos Polivos male brutal vocals, they give us a very dark and melodic death atmosphere with a hint of progressive elements. At this point let me add that although the lead singer is Dimitra Vintsou in quite a lot of tracks she takes the place of the back vocalist giving much more depth to the band’s sound. It is obvious that the more you hear this album the more the band has completely differentiated from the previous genre, and someone that is a fan of the old Paradise Lost or even Septic Flesh can easily begin listening to them.
The album consists of 10 tracks of which 2 are instrumental and with well mentioned guests. Like “Secret rite”, with Sodom’s Marcus Freiwald, Soilwork’s Bjorn “Speed” Strid for the song “Blessing Of Tragedy” that in my opinion is the best on this album and of course “Beneath Abyss” with Alterself’s Andrew Geo, for which the band shot a videoclip, one of the best I have ever seen, since generally the metal bands are a bit stuck with the classic pattern, with the band that just plays and do some headbanging to some concert, which I consider obsolete … no more!
We are talking about an album which I personally enjoyed very much and I will continue to listen. Since it’s a big change for the band they must work on it, but I don’t think that a huge effort must be put on it, they are almost there. Check them out!
