This was a big surprise for me, to write a review for the beloved Cannibals. A really favorite band of mine, especially after Chris Barnes era (I know that many of you will disagree with me to the bitter end), I prefer the sweet little voice of George, without demoting that sick beast who used to sing before him.
This is 13th album in 25 years. Pretty good if you think they release one disk per two years roughly. I have never listened to an album that I didn’t like, or that left me un-interested, except Kill maybe.
The typical cement-type sound, the drums and the bass sound like a steam roller, heavy guitars like a hammer to your face and a vocalist that throws up his intestines. Very nice riffing that drags you to come into the pit at each show. The sound is crystal clear and aggressive, as befits a band of such caliber. A very good album in general, that every fan will expect of the band from one point of view, a very good classic Cannibal album from the other side of view, for someone who does not know the band and just got or wants to buy the album. Erik Rutan has been doing a good job for the band for their latest 3 discs (although I wouldn’t say the same for his own groups). Neil Kernon also did the same thing with Gore Obsessed 12 years ago (time does pass by so fast!) and The Wretched Spawn 10 years ago (this one had left me speechless back then!)
The album begins with a demolishing track and gets you straight to the point. Classic Cannibal, in every way of the word “classic”. All tracks follow the classic pattern of the band without surprises. The album as I already said, a nice classic Cannibal album, where the guys just gave us another good sample of what they can do after 2.5 decades in the death metal business. It has got its’ mid tempo tracks, got some fast ones, got some more technical ones, got its blast beat tracks as well. It also features these abstract solos of which they play more in their latest releases (evolution?), and Paul also on the drums is trying some new stuff (he is more old school in his ideas), and even in blasts, he prefers the 1, 2 technique with his hands instead of hitting the snare and the hi-hat at the same time.
Fire up the chainsaw! Hack all their heads off!!! These lyrics are fucking awesome! 44 minutes of brutal death metal at its best! Check it out!
