Swedish one – man – band, Carchosa, returned to discography by releasing its second full length album on September 2021 entitled “Realms”. Henrik Nygren has once again laid down all of his thoughts and inspiration and decided to share them with us. With the assistance of dear artists from other bands / projects, like Fallujah, Wintersun, Scar Symmetry among others, the final result will appeal to Melodic Death Metal fans that have a soft spot for prog details.
“Realms” is an album dual in nature. It surely follows the path paved by its predecessor in terms of general musical structure, yet at the same time i got the feeling there’s a shift in mentality and direction. Nonetheless, the album works its magic and grabs you by the neck quite instantly. The guitar work in this one is supertight and carefully thought of, with chugging riffs and sharp solos that seem to be constantly shifting ; from powerful and fiercely fast distorted pieces to melodic and rhythmic passages, either simple or meticulously crafted. I guess this has to do with the fact that Henrik’s sources of inspiration are varied and thus differently filtered. Vocal performanced stand out as well, with screeches, screams and growls alternating with each other and even get intertwined. The drum work is passionate and holds everything in place. I felt at multiple times that the bass guitar is missing, which is a downer.
The album has enough memorable moments to be considered well rounded, yet it lacks the tracks that may have the potential to become hits or conquer altogether a place in the “albums of the year” list. Greatly executed, though I don’t think I’ll easily circle back to this release later on.
