Cellar Darling is a threesome including former members of Eluveitie, Anna Murphy, Merlin Sutter and Ivo Henzi. After their announcement in June 2016 where they mentioned their resigning from Eluveitie, shortly afterwards unveiled this new project with a single entitled “Challenge”, followed by a tour with Amorphis until the release of “This Is The Sound” on June 30rd. “This Is The Sound” consists of 14 tracks and from the intro “Avalanche”, it is clear that you are about to listen a just more rock version of Eluveitie. I am very sorry to not being able to judge this release objectively, but only with having Eluveitie in my mind, it leaves no room for me to do otherwise. Apart from “Hullaballoo” and “Six Days”, in which the chain breaks, the rest sounds like a never ending piece. In the end, “Hedonia” changes the pattern for resembling a lot with “Helvetios”. Generally, I have to say that was a really big mistake of Anna for leaving Eluveitie. Her voice was loved extremely much as a piece of them. They even brought Liv Kristine to replace her on Wacken and got a really negative feedback. If these guys actually wanted to do something different besides Eluveitie (as they mentioned in some interviews), they should never play on the same field of folk metal again. Because any comparison between the 2 bands, makes Cellar Darling extremely underrated, not to say a poor man’s Eluveitie. This release is quite nice, but does not seem to have any particular prospects.
