After nearly ten years since 2016’s “Legacy,” Polish black metal veterans Christ Agony make their comeback with “Anthems.” This impressive album holds its own alongside the band’s iconic earlier works such as “Unholyunion,” “Daemoonseth Act II,” and “Moonlight.” Released on September 26, 2025, by Deformeathing Production, the record merges melodic black and dark metal with influences drawn from both modern and 1990s eras, crafting a rich, atmospheric, and ritualistic sonic journey.
“Anthems” consists of six tracks, most surpassing seven minutes, totaling approximately 46 minutes. The music combines brooding soundscapes, acoustic guitars, and heavy melodic riffs with harsh black metal vocals and occasional death metal growls. Additional touches like didgeridoo, synthesizers, choirs, and blast beats contribute to the album’s texture and complexity, while the overall tempo remains predominantly slow to mid-paced.
Noteworthy songs such as “Empire Of Twilight” and “Nocturnal Dominion” are highlighted for their memorable, emotional, and grand compositions. The lyrical themes delve into occultism, darkness, melancholy, death, and transcendence, expressed through mature, bold writing and a somber atmosphere.
The recording spanned several phases between Cezar’s home studio and Poland’s Studio Morąg, with most sessions taking place in Morąg. Michał Grabowski, known for capturing Christ Agony’s signature atmospheric sound, engineered the recordings.
The production approach focused on creating a natural, raw, and powerful ambiance that evokes a living ritual instead of a polished, sterile finish. Cezar was deeply involved in every step, from writing to overseeing recording, mixing, and mastering, which balanced analog warmth with digital clarity. Vocals were recorded sparingly to retain their emotional force, while guitars and bass employed tube preamps for dynamic richness. Drums were recorded using both close and ambient mics to preserve authentic room resonance.
“Anthems” reaffirms Christ Agony’s ongoing significance and artistic growth in the black metal realm, combining ritualistic mood with melodic strength and profound themes.
