Genre: Death Metal
Country: U.S.A.
Label: Redefining Darkness Records
Year: 2018

Cist was formed in June of 2014 as a result of the breakup of another band, Hell’s Thrash Horsemen, by guitarist Nikolay Komshukov. They hail from Russia and this is their sophomore EP (following also ‘Synthetic Life’ single from 2014, ‘Chemical Tomb’ EP and the split with U.S. Death/Thrash Legends Solstice both from 2015) out via Metal Race Records. I first heard about them when they signed an agreement with the Greek label Alone Records in order to release their debut EP Chemical Tomb on 7″ Vinyl. They play old school death metal with plenty of twists and turns, full of dirty low tuned guitar riffs and crusty aesthetic here and there. Obituary, Death, Pestilence, early Asphyx, Morgoth and the Floridian Death Metal Scene, obviously seem to have an effect on the character of Cist, that provide us a well filtered raw death metal that has nothing to be jealous of Gruesome or Gatecreeper that I guess that dominate the American scene at this moment. There’s a Sodom – Teutonic thrash base that makes the EP even more cult to my ears, as the Schuldiner-like riffs (Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy era of course) blend with the solid and marked by exactness and accuracy of detail rhythm section and the similar to John ‘the Throat’ Tardy growls. They might lack of originality, but if you just focus on that, you probably just run out of guts…
