Clouds Taste Satanic (Clouds for ease of reference) are a, relatively, new band. Their debut “To Sleep Beyond The Earth” was released in 2015 and in just 2(ish) years they have released 4 albums. I was lucky enough to review 2 out of their 3 first albums, making my enthusiasm, when I received the bandcamp code for “The Glitter of Infinite Hell”, quite understandable. Despite the band’s “young age”, they have quite a momentum for the doom/stoner genre. And contrary to what someone would expect with such little time between releases they maintain a level of quality in their music.
This album is, in a way, a return to the band’s roots. The compositions of their last 2 albums were kind of short(?!), songs with a 6-8 minute duration, in “The Glitter of Infinite Hell” they return to the motif of their debut, with songs 18 minutes long. The duration of their songs is not the only element that makes me think of that “return to the roots”. Their last album has, to a degree, elements that remind me of the early works of Black Sabbath and the 70s scene in general. Those elements have been obviously filtered through a more modern prism with the end result being quite interesting. Many elements from the first doom bands can be also noticed in this release. Don’t let the post-doom tag in bandcamp to fool you though, any non doom components do nothing more than adding, or even emphasizing, how heavy this release is.
It is only natural for some listeners to be alienated by the long duration of the songs, that characteristic is making the band’s job a little bit harder afterall, considering how many times the composition in the song must change so it won’t get boring, while at the same time it must stay inside specific “limits” to avoid having a track that sounds like a lousy mix different songs. Clouds manage to achieve that, to a certain point, just like they did in their debut.
There are a few other aspects on this release though, it’s a concept album, as much as this is possible since all songs are instrumental, or that’s the impression I got from the titles of the tracks combined with the title of the album. Another sign that they have performed a “return” to their roots is their choise of a 1550 painting for cover, “Christ’s descent into hell” by Hieronymous Bosch, a Dutch painter. Those familiar with Clouds surely remember the amazing covers of their first 2 albums.
Surely a pretty good release that won’t dissapoint those who are into doom/stoner in general and of course those who are already fans of Clouds.
