If you asked me about the Portuguese metal scene, there would be very few bands that came to mind: legendary Tarantula, mainstream Moonspell and lazy Grog.
Dementia 13 is a death metal band from Oporto; I had been tempted to buy their debut EP (entitled “Tales for the Carnivorous”) back in 2013, but honestly I didn’t like it a lot although there were many good reviews for it. When I realized that the band has entered the death metal artillery of Memento Mori for their debut “Ways of Enclosure”, I was sure that there must be progress in their sound (mainly) and not only (I am referring to the artwork of the great Mark Riddick, which is memorable).
Right from the opening riff you can realize that the band has made great progress: ultimate death metal sound, the old-school way, in the veins of Death (“Leprosy” & “Spiritual Healing” era), Massacre, Burial combined with a Bolt Thrower taste. We don’t have the opportunity to hear such death metal often, as it is missing from today’s scene. Not ground-breaking, but so well-played and passionate that you should follow blindly. Every song is based on old horror films with samples as intros; we also have a great cover on the classical “Halloween”‘s theme. Amazing vocals reminding of Kam Lee, sound production as it should sound, excellent guitar leads and a result that is supreme at all levels.
There are no highlights here, the whole album is a killer. By far one of my best albums for 2015. A must-buy release.
