Demon Spell is a quartet from Catania, Sicily (Italy) that features in their line-up two “veterans’’ of the Italian metal scene; drummer Mario Casanova (Schizo member for more than 20 years) and guitarist Francesco Bauso (founding member of the lesser known stoner-doom band Haunted). The line-up is completed with the vocalist Federico Fano and bassist Riccardo Liberti. Their striking debut mini – album “Evil Nights” is out via Dying Victims Productions on CD and 12” vinyl formats.
For those who worship high-pitched vocals in the veins of King Diamond, the eerie atmosphere, the proto Black Metal inspiration, the sensation of pure evil and the raw sound of the four songs presented here and of course all of you who were born under the sign of the moon you will love this release and it’s 70’s Judas Priest influences. Leaning closer to Mercyful Fate rather than King Diamond approaching they have this bitter-sweet aura of Death SS and some Witch Cross parts here and there as also Witchfynde-like too, some shocking hellish horror stories narrated like only soaring King Diamond-esque vocals can (executed perfectly from Federico Fano without sounding mimic or mediocre) and finally some nice riffing creating a result worth exploring. Can’t choose if my favorite song is “Dark Deceiver (Woman of the Black Oath)” or “Black Wings”…Probably both!
