Devildriver. A band that I’ve never listened to thoroughly before, even though the Californians count 13 years in the music scene. I do realize that I shouldn’t start off with their seventh full length album, titled ‘Trust No One’, yet here I go.

The album contains 10 tracks with a total duration of approximately 41 minutes. It’s somewhat difficult to define the musical style of the band , ranging from NWOAHM to Melodic Death Metal. Having never listened to the band before, I can note some things that someone used to the sound of the band couldn’t.

One of the things done wrong in the album is the vocals, which I found pretty weak for my taste. When the guitars stampede and the break down you’ve been waiting for kicks in, it’d be better if the vocals could pin you down and pulverize you. And to avoid any misunderstandings, I’m not saying the vocals are bad – I’m just saying they lack the necessary aggression.

When it comes to the music, things are much better by far; complex melodies and song structures with beautiful lyrical parts. Every instrument shines out and you’ll never find yourself getting bored while listening to a song.

There is a huge problem with this album though… It repeats itself. This has nothing to do with the compositions as a whole; what ruins the whole picture is some lead guitar parts that are repeated in every track throughout the album. This wouldn’t be that bad but if we come to think that this happens in every single song and on top of that the lead parts are similar (musically and in tone – even the musical scales are the same), we get the feeling that both the guitarists were bored to death to compose a descent lead part for every track and just performed variations of the same melody instead.

My favorite song is ‘My Night Sky’ yet this undermines the rest of the songs and overrates the album (since all of the songs sound alike). Nonetheless, this isn’t a bad but a repetitive album. I’m giving it 3/6 because it was an excellent company all this hours I was listening to it. After all, when the music makes you move your head in its rhythm, it has fulfilled its purpose.

3/6
