Dimmu Borgir are returning to the studio for a new record but before that, there is a mini come back. Instead of a best of compilation as a “preshow party», a live release would look way better to me. Everyone who is about to throw some trash on me for that, let me remind you first of all that this is something you have been doing for more than 20 years and yes, haters gonna hate. Second, no matter how right you probably are on this, the fans that have been listening to them are a little more right than you. Being used in denial and in the mainstream sound Dimmu Borgir are a part of, because I can’t remember when it was the last time the band played black metal, we are here to see if it is fair or not to give 15 euro to gain a release such as “Forces Of The Northern Night”. Probably we can talk about a full-fledged collection of well-played pieces and a high aesthetic result (although this is closer to symphonic soundtrack sounds instead of black metal) but …I honestly do not see a reason for this release. Not in the year 2017 and almost 5-6 years after recording the material for those 2 disks. Obviously it would have been more meaningful in 2012, but now it seems to me as the definition of a commercial trick more than a quality job, isolated from the marketing tricks. Over time as no other release by these Norwegians, it will be hard to find the way out of the shelves of the record stores (electronic or traditional) to the discothèques of their fans. Maybe again and no. The purpose is to re-name the band’s roots and revive the public’s interest in them so to prepare the ground for their forthcoming new album. This is understandable enough but takes the “Forces Of The Northern Night” to a secondary release place. However, its material is powerful enough. Vortex’s voice is missing and the guitars sound a little “behind”, while they could co-exist with the orchestra. Because the orchestra is extremely impressive and steals the show. The fans’ rushed enemies, please take a look before you start to like them (a little) more or hate them (even) more.
