Distorted Harmony’s “Chain Reaction” is a great sample of progressive metal. It’s the second studio effort for the band from Israel, it has a very modern sound that will remind you of other contemporary progressive bands and flows more or less effortlessly from beginning to end.
Most elements found in pretty much every modern progressive metal band’s work are also present here; aggresive riffs and the kind of heavy or fast guitars that is quite common in the genre, emotional breaks and mellower melodies, followed more often than not by sudden outbursts and a general disturbing, if sometimes beautiful atmosphere. What sets Distorted Harmony apart though is the fact that they actually present strong compositions here! Despite its length, “Misguided” is an amazing song and one my favorites, the instrumental “Nothing (But The Rain)” showcases some great musicianship, “As You Go” is a simple but pretty song, “Natural Selection” is a bit more catchy and energetic and “Methylene Blue” closes the album impressively.
As expected, the guitar work is splendid, the rhythm section strong and Misha Soukhinin’s vocals fit the music perfectly. There’s a couple of fillers and sometimes(rarely) the sheer complexity of the compositions may feel a bit exhausting but make no mistake, “Chain Reaction” is a beautiful album and definitely worth the time of any fan of modern progressive metal.
