Dødheimsgard: “666 International”|| Chaos In The House Of Death

Consider that nowadays in 2014, almost 15 years after its first release “666 International” is still an avant – garde album, still ahead of its time, a release coming from the future, a too provoking album for blacksters. So you can imagine all that in 1999 and its impact… “666 International” is the third full-length album by the Norwegians Dødheimsgard. It was released on June 11, 1999, by Moonfog Productions. With this release the band abandoned the black metal style of their previous two albums, a change that started in their 1998 EP “Satanic Art”.

“Satanic Art” was released in May 1998, by Moonfog Productions and is a lot more straightforward and has much more blasting in its raw sound than “666 International”. It is actually the beginning of Dødheimsgard’s transition from black metal to the industrial/avant-garde/progressive/experimental sound but many seem to forget it, probably because that was something fully realized on “666 International”. It was also Dødheimsgard’s first release to feature Svein Egil Hatlevik (Fleurety) on keyboards, their only one to feature Galder (Dimmu Borgir, Old Man’s Child) on guitars and the last to feature Cerberus on bass. I have to mention that the samples used in the songs “Traces of Reality” and “Wrapped in Plastic” are both taken from the famous psychological/supernatural thriller TV series ‘Twin Peaks’. But enough with the EP. Back to “666 International”.

The album heads into a more avant-garde style that fuses black and industrial metal, with even electronic elements and keyboard interludes and samples. Almost a paranoiac album mixing jazz, techno beats and distorted black metal guitars “666 International” has chaotic song structures and indigestible compositions. It is definitely an album that justifies the term progressive 100% and it was Dødheimsgard’s last release to feature Aldrahn on vocals, Apollyon on bass, and Svein Egil Hatlevik on keyboards. It was also their last release under the name Dødheimsgard; in 2003, the band shortened their name to DHG. The moniker Dødheimsgard is a conjunction of three words: Død which means death, Heim which means home and Gard which means mansion (at least in this context). A natural translation of Dødheimsgard into English would be “Mansion/House of Death” or “Realm of the Dead/Death”.

*Actually the album has 66 tracks (!), but tracks 10 to 65 are all nothing but a few seconds of silence. Track 66 is music for about 1:30, followed by another approximate 10 minutes of silence.

** Photo cover shows an accident in a Norwegian factory that produces jam… Yes you can see the spilled jam on the factory’s floor and not a gram of blood on the cover folks…

***The piano intro on “Shiva-Interfere” is taken from the outro track “Wrapped in Plastic” from “Satanic Art”.

*****It was re-released in 2011 by Peaceville Records, and included two bonus tracks. “Hæmorrhage Era One Reconstructed” that was originally featured on the 2000 compilation “Moonfog 2000: A Different Perspective” and “Proton Navigator” that mixed by Yusef Parvez for this re-release.
