Dødsferd is not unknown to anyone who is a serious listener of Greek’s scene extreme part. The bastard “child” of Wrath, who for years offers us inhuman and in your face black metal with his band. So today, we have a collection, with tracks either re-recorded or as originally released, from the entire course of the band. You will wonder what is so special about this collection … They are the most blackened and suicidal Dødsferd’s songs, titled “Death Shall Purify the Wounds of Your Fragile Mortality”. Let’s dive into it…
With a total duration of 86 minutes, yes 86 you read correctly, and with a new track, “Deterioration”, which was composed and recorded exclusively for this release, we have the ultimate collection, which will bring to the surface the worst feelings of the listener. What he has been struggling to suppress and hide in the darkest part of his mind for so many years, so that he can live his life without thinking that there is no point in continuing.
In terms of production I have to say, it’s just amazing. The tracks do not have much complexity, so if the production was not good, the result would be simply “empty”. But here, without knowing whether it was done on purpose or not, we have a production that fills this emptiness, all the instruments, especially the guitars, are spread out and open as needed, so you can hear it from everywhere. I do not know if I can properly write what I mean, but I think you got it. This is the case for the first 4 tracks of this collection. Going to tracks 5 and 6, we have a more Norwegian I could say sound approach and I will admit it, it fits me much better for the specific tracks. However, when we talk about suicidal situations, we kind of want a more “not so good” production. I am using quotes for “not so good”, because it actually IS good. What I mean is that it is not so clean and personally this puts me more in the mood of this particular release. Reaching the last track, which is the new one written for this collection as we said above, we have a different side of the band and Wrath himself. With lyrics in Greek, without distorted guitars, only clean playing, slow drums and vocals that show a man, seconds before he leaves this useless world, is the absolute closure. Without much fuss, as soon as the song is over, you fill a bathtub, go lay inside and just wait for the last drop of blood to empty and be “free”.
Musically and playfully, we have all the right ingredients for a band of this kind. Slow drums, slow double bass parts where it should be, with full blast beat outbursts in the right places, the bass holding the rhythm section and the vocals … what to say about Wrath’s vocals. In a single word, pain. Another word, misanthropy. Simple and beautiful.
Closing, I will say the following. Lovers of the genre, RUN AND BUY IT!!! Those of you who are new, invest in it but take it one step at a time. Personally, and to be completely honest, although this kind of black metal is not something I will listen to at home when I relax, I will take it because I have to have it in my collection. Let’s not laugh each other. Dødsferd with less than an excellent release can not be found anywhere in the known universe.
