Something less than 15 years of presence have the Athenian black metallers DODSFERD on their backs and «Wastes of Life» is the ninth consecutive full album and although it only includes five songs, in my opinion, it’s the most complete work they’ve delivered so far.
The album starts with the title track, a creepy intro, a recitation surrounded by feminine cries while the piece that follows is the definition of hate and misanthropy; slow-moving, dark, eerie, balancing on the boundaries of post black at some moments, with razor-like melodies and vocals that spew tons of pain and mental illness. Do you want to understand what happens in the mind of a psychopath before committing suicide? This is precisely «Sterile Death, Without Mourning». A sick trip to death.
«The Dead Have No Speech For…» is very different. This is the legitimate child of northern Europe, that seems it has been forgotten for years in the drawers of Darkthrone, from the time they composed «Panzerfaust», while «To The Fall of Man», the monotonous chords and violins of which create a suffocating atmosphere, which in combination with the full of pain and despair screams of Wrath, deliver a strange but impressive result. The album closes with «Graves of Your Creator», a beautiful track that confuses the “clean” melodies with intense outbursts, a song that is nothing like all the previous ones.
Basically, this is the main feature of «Wastes of Life», the difference between songs; something that was largely missed their previous albums. Dodsferd have delivered a tremendous record, with nice ideas, excellent performance and very good production. Give it a shot. It’s worth it!
