Drab Majesty, the up-and-coming post-punk duo hailing from Los Angeles, made a stop to Athens on Death Disco’s stage for their European Tour promoting their latest output, “The Demonstration”. The gig was organized by 3 Shades of Black. Because of a technical problem with their flight, the gig was transferred for the next day, Sunday May 7th and The Rattler Proxy’s shoes opening the gig were filled in by Vercetti Technicolor. Metal Invader was once more on the battlefield and here’s what we saw and listened to.

After a slight expected delay, Vercetti Technicolor climbs on stage alone, accompanied by his laptop and synths. He overcame quickly and painlessly some technical sound difficulties at the beginning, he gave a 45minute (almost) rhythmic and creepy performance, starting out on a more classic vibe and putting you through more horror vibes as the time passed. I have to say that the term VHS horror that he chooses to describe his music earned my attention, but I only perceived it as such towards the end of his set where more old-school European soundtrack-type touches reigned over his minimal synth beats. That was the most interesting part of his show for me.

Drab Majesty were on stage after a great deal of stage-smoke that gave much to the “alien”-type (not the movie) aesthetics they’ve created. Their cyberpunk look and their grandiose kinesiology on stage draw all eyes on them and the audience coiled before them from the first moment. With great ease the cruised through dream synth pop sounds and rhythmic dark wave songs accompanied by Deb DeMure’s shoegaze-inspired guitar. The sound was excellent throughout their set and was a major plus to their show. Their set was kind of monotonous for my taste because it lacked the necessary bouts or “surprises” to be unique. In conclusion it was a beautiful performance and definitely a great way to spend your Sunday night, witnessing the ascension of a fresh group to its establishment.
