Genre: Heavy Metal
Label: Dying Victims Productions
The name Drifter brings me in mind a small bar in Salonica (now shut down) where you could listen excellent Heavy Music after a live show in town and of course several Heavy Metal bands under this moniker, besides the famous Iron Maiden hymn. Well now underground circles have their eyes on Drifter from Detroit. Their 4 song demo was recorded in 2021 making clocks turn 40 years back. Ok they say don’t judge a book or a record by its cover but damn Drifter’s demo artwork cover seems to confess everything about their primitive sound. Even the physical copy is on cassette format (via Dying Victims Productions. Original Drifter’s “Demo 2021” on Caviar Records and Tapes sold out immediately and this is the European version distribution) making it even more cult than it actually is. I mean the raw yet melodic twin guitars, the 80’s atmosphere and NWOBHM inspired choruses have been heard before Drifter and very often even in nowadays, still these 4 songs are charming enough to make you dig in this release. Simple structure old school feeling, emotional melodies, rough guitars and solid rhythm section by the dynamic duo that consist Drifter is all that Heavy Metal about after all. No need to just drop obscure names from early days of NWOBHM to find their influences. Highly recommended.
