Ok, let’s start from the beginning… Elephant Riders, Spain, Malaga, sludge, doom, stoner, EP… Hmm… These were my first thoughts when I was given this EP or, to be more precise, this single release, since it consists of just two tracks. I became acquainted with Elephant Riders by reading this year’s New Long Festival lineup and watching them perform live via localstage.gr streaming. I was clearly satisfied with their stage presence.
But I think that what I saw on stage was not reflected in ‘Challenger’, since I found nothing special in the two songs the record consists of. The first one is homonym to the record’s title and the other one is ‘Lone Wolf’. I guess the tracks act something like forerunners for their next album. As I have mentioned in my other reviews, I‘m a little picky with the pronunciation, which is oftenly evident in the way our Spanish friend performs.
Generally, there is nothing fresh. The songs are not bad, though their riffs are monotonous and overly played by many other bands of the genre. The truth is that this genre is booming in recent years in Greece and probably our ears are now accustomed to special sounds.
I hope in the end that their next album will give us something else, more dynamic, since, judging by what I heard and saw in this gig, it certainly raises my hopes for something good in the future.
