Endless Recovery from Athens have decided to offer to both themselves and the devotees of the genre the best possible gift. During the Christmas vacations the band is going to physically release their latest effort, their second full length record entitled “Revel In Demise”, which still holds on dearly to the logic and attitude of that thrash – meets – black style.
The thought of the overly – played ‘80’s Speed / Thrash getting tedious seems logical, despite the fact that it has been resuscitated in modern days. This topic can as well cause conflict between groups of people, especially on the subject of whether such a genre should be performed in 2015 or not. Well, Endless Recovery step in with “Revel In Demise” to prove that should you decide to dedicate time and effort to produce something well – crafted, then the result is more than satisfying and seizes such discussions. What we come across in “Revel In Demise” is a hybrid that ‘80s Speed / Thrash I was talking about earlier, with hints of Black / Thrash influences, the genre that flourished in modern times. Supersonic guitars, with elaborate moments scattered here and there, result into a diverse yet multi – varied deliver that keeps our interest at high levels (“Trapped In A Vicious Circle”, “Blood Countess”). Along with the guitars, tremendous work has been done on the bass guitar (for example listen to “Reaping Fire”), to which the necessary space has been given for it to be developed and to be heard as it must, as opposed to many releases, where the bass is smothered by the production and treated as a non – significant instrument. As for the drums, their natural sound / physical record and the impact of the mixing and mastering processes on them add depth, intensity, aggression, and create an appetite for fresh meat. Ultimately, the vocals have taken things down, or at least that’s what I absorbed. Those feline/Deathhammer high pitches vocals we came across in the EP “Resistant Bangers” seem to have been left behind, but not totally. In a way they’ve become more aggressive and darker simultaneously, and even if the influences are kind of obvious, character is built. High frequency vocal outbursts surely exist, yet they’re not so many.
On a general level, improvement / evolution is a given. “Revel In Demise” is a much more mature work and better meticulous. Even the smallest detail appears to be crossed by microscope. They seem to have “grown up”, showing their teeth to the Greek and universal stage. The badass character they’ve for long had, combined with the neat outcome, certifies a must-have record. In terms of production, it’s tailored to the band’s measurements; it leaves room in each instrument to breathe and unfold, but at the same time to join the other instruments in order to produce a solid mix. The album was produced by the band itself and Nikos Papakostas in Entasis Studios.
Highlights: “Leather Militia” (although the title is outdated, the music is excellent), “Blood Countess”, “Evoke Perdition”.
