Firewind are worldwide known as one of the most reliable proposals of the post 00’s bands if we talk about a Heavy/Power spectrum. Having created their own peaks over the years, having built a core of fans in many countries but also managing to always release good records. Gus G., is still the driving force and pillar of the whole project, who kept the band alive despite the departure of members, but also his own other priorities at times.
“Stand United” is Firewind’s tenth release, which means we pretty much know what we’re going to hear. Well-crafted and played Heavy/Power with Gus G.’s talent shining through, especially in the guitar solos. There are compositions that stand out and the band chose two of them to present at the concert in Athens last September. Nice album overall, there are songs that Firewind will add to their live setlist for years, but there are also some second thoughts during the listening. Because I’m afraid that Herbie Langhans doesn’t have that voice that will take off the compositions. His bluntness hint is not as well suited to Gus G’s melodic concerns. This is a specific thought that can lead to a general conclusion though…
The many singer changes have deprived Firewind fans of being able to identify with one voice. They have also deprived the band itself of the ability to go higher, in a genre with very intense competition. Nevertheless, “Stand United” is another very good effort by one of the most important Greek scene ambassadors. It’s a record that will satisfy fans of the band and after all will keep Firewind name in the spotlight for all the right reasons.
