The debut record of the Norwegian heavy metal act Flight was one of the albums that caused great discussions the previous year. It’s a pity we didn’t deal with it earlier. It’s because time isn’t always on our side, despite the fact that Iron Maiden are opposed to that statement… The recipe Flight follow in their debut self – titled record is simple, tested and successful. Simple compositions, melodies with an intentional old – school sound, double guitars, accompanying drums and subtle bass guitar. They’ve elaborately studied the 70s but they’re not based entirely on them, though by the way “Don’t Lose It” is an amazing track with many Judas Priest elements (those of their early eras) and a magnificent guitar solo, thus becoming the single of the album. The rest of the songs are based on more N.W.O.B.H.M. and Scandinavian heavy metal structures, the ones that gave birth to countless gems up until 1985. “As Silence Falls”, “Lion’s Den” (with vocals similar to Heavy Load) and “Flight” are the tracks that stand out. Another track that proves that we’re dealing with a mature band is the instrumental “Nightrider”, which has a Judas Priest aesthetic attached to it. In general, the guitars in this record reminded me of the legendary duo Downing/Tipton in their early years. “Escape” is a strong track as well. There is a balance between the two sides of the vinyl and the production seems to be ideal. The record is missing that one hit that will rocket the band and cause a buzz to more people than just the usual suspects of the field. “Flight” is the album that will change your life but it certainly has a sweet charm, an old-fashioned style and a badassery that doesn’t go unnoticed.
