“The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel” is a pentalogy of novels written in the 16th century by François Rabelais, telling the adventures of two giants, Gargantua and his son Pantagruel. The work is written in an amusing, extravagant, and satirical vein, features much erudition, vulgarity, and wordplay, and is regularly compared with the works of William Shakespeare and James Joyce. Rabelais was a polyglot, and the work introduced “a great number of new and difficult words into the French language”. I can only guess that Gärgäntuäh that are hailing from The Netherlands may have taken their name from the famous character of Rabelais; which is a good thing as it shows at least great taste on books and an educational horizon, but it is more than just that. “Urmystyk” is their debut studio full length and sophomore release as it follows the 2020’s EP entitled “Dödenlicht”. The Dutch veteran (they are active in the black metal scene since begin 90’s) duo play straightforward second-wave black metal as we first heard it from the Scandinavians back in early 90’s, a raw black metal combining haunting choirs and melodies, based on dark atmosphere, mysticism and punishing riffs. Some great majestic moments and epic flourishes make the album one of the most interesting and obscure releases of the sub-genre. Highlights the tremendous vitriolic vocals of Forgotten, the brilliant use of synthesizer , “Hargu af Daudr” and “Trolldskjoering”. The CD version is limited to 200 copies and comes with the “Dödenlicht” EP as bonus. Order the CD/LP/Cassette from: new-era-productions.nl/shop/
