Somewhere in 2008 a band was formed with only goals being the annihilation of every nugget of humanity and to spread hatred for the mundane like a plague, and to worship darkness and its King. We’re talking about Goat Torment, who have just released their second full length album “Sermons to Death” via Amor Fati Productions.
The album kicks off with a somewhat strange intro, which brings in mind marching troops, as far as I understand. The first normal track is “Bones Aligned”, which makes you understand what the deal here is. Occult, blasphemies, darkness. The strange processed vocals, give depth to the piece while making you think that Kwel sings through a tunnel that leads to hell. Generally, the vocals and the drums are the ones that stand out and create the identity of the band and not the guitars, which happens mostly to the bands of this genre. Chaos is caused by “Rising Dominion”. Enchanting, it combines extreme death metal with doom, thus the result is superb. The atmosphere imposed transfers you to a spooky, unearthly point in the middle of nowhere, perfect to perform a ritual or call Lucifer for a little chat. “Defloration Of The Holy Cunt” (these are song titles, ladies and gentlemen) destroys you with the brutality of musical instruments and the extremely aggressive mood. There are moments when you forget to breathe.
Judging by the band’s performance, execution and technique, the (two) members of Goat Torment know their game well. We distinguish right techniques, elaborate compositions, as well as professionalism. They know what they want, they know what they do and do it properly. There’s a certain complexity on vocals. They’re powerful, with enviable dynamics. They’re not nailed to a stable level, but there are ups and downs and changes on the scales, making the tracks stand out. As for the guitars, they generally don’t present anything particularly special, although they are insanely sick riffs and paranoid solos to compensate you in full. The bass is admittedly somewhat buried, nonetheless in some places it’s set forward and it’s actually charming. The drums sound like machine guns in wartime. Torturer’s kicks and blasts are not mundane, as in any classic black metal album. It is obvious that he likes to experiment and go off trivial. His blast – beats are excellent. The skins have their own character.Compared with the previous album (“Dominande Tenebrae”) “Sermons to Death” is faster, more refined and even better production. The production is clean and highlights the compositions and, by extension, . the talent of the band. The record takes over just for half an hour (forty minutes to be precise), but it introduces us to a dark and endless world where the concept of time is insignificant.
“Sermons to Death” is ideal for Antaeus, Archgoat and Pseudogod fans.
Highlights of the album are: “Rising Dominion”, “Hierarchy of Negligence” and “The Domineering Profane”.
