You don’t have to listen to metal, rock, punk; you don’t have to be a hipster or anything else, to understand or just respect the musical majesty of Godspeed You Black Emperor.

For 15 years now, they write their own history in contemporary music, giving birth to post – rock along with 2 or 3 other bands and have already supplied us with monumental masterpieces that will remain in the centre of interest for quite a long time; decades even.

But, there’s something that makes a difference. Godspeed is not a musical group (or a collective) like the rest. Here we don’t deal with a bunch of friends who gathered together, joining their influences in order to express themselves and win the crowd via their vanity, which is already evident by their attitude towards life and their sociopolitical statements and actions.

The music and the lyrics they produce, like any other healthy and honest musician, derives from within, but what you listen to is not just that inner quality but everything that surrounds you… I find it quite impossible not to be carried away emotionally each time I listen to their new record.

I cannot analyze it with musical or technical terms, as there’s no point in mentioning things like, it’s heavier than every other record (it is), it has drone and noise elements (it has) or the orchestration is magnificent (it is). I cannot do that, because when I listen to it, it’s not just music that reaches my ears, but agony, pain, insecurity, fear and suffocation by the contemporary new middle-age era. The need of the man to stand up and fight for his life.

Planet Earth 2015: “Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress” is its soundtrack.
